Crates Cup - Team Knock Out 2023
Tenterden Golf Club and its SS Captain Tony Smith could not have done more to make the 2023 Knock-Out Final a special occasion for West Malling and Bearsted to contest, not least against the background of equivalent extraordinary events in the Ryder Cup in Rome. The weather was perfect and the course immaculate and the event enhanced by Tenterden members acting as starter, a referee for each match, spotters and a photographer. The players responded with some scintillating golf, played in good spirit. Bearsted pairs had the better of the earlier holes but were later well contained; each game ebbed and flowed and was finely poised before each was decided on the most challenging 5-par 17th hole. The team captains both prevailed by 2&1 in their respective games 1 and 2 but the third game and match was decided in Bearsted’ s favour by 3&1. The Club Captain attended, and Club President Ivo Fowle kindly presented the Crates Cup and individual awards.
To all participating clubs
Congratulations to both West Malling and Bearsted who I can now confirm will contest the KO Final at Tenterden Golf Club on Friday 29Sept. It is refreshing to see the efforts of Group A and B clubs to end the domination of Group D clubs in the first four years of this competition.
I appreciate the efforts of all clubs who have entered this year and most ties were completed remarkably promptly. I look forward to receiving (via your Group annual meetings) any thoughts on the future format. This year there was greater scarcity of Away wins which tends to justify that ties should be decided on Home and Away aggregates. Nevertheless I hope that more clubs can feel persuaded to enter the fray.
Best wishes to all,
John Crates

These results have been quite remarkable in that they include the defeat of every one of the five Group D entries, representing all the winners of all previous years of the competition.
This is achieved partly by the emergence and success of all four Group B entries.
Another feature was the first time the sudden death play-off was called into action after Etchinghill and Lamberhurst tied both on matches won and then on margin of holes won; Lamberhurst's nominated pair won at the third extra hole.
The way is now wide open for a new champion club, and the draw even makes it possible for Group B to take all four semi-final spots unless the other clubs from Groups A & F see otherwise.
My thanks to clubs which have been eliminated for some very competitive golf, often in dubious weather.

· A buggy may not be shared with an able-bodied player or an able-bodied player’s equipment;
· The buggy must be booked by the individual player direct with the host club;
· Any competitor using a buggy will travel through the course at the speed of the group in which they are playing at all times. It is not permissible to move ahead of the group to prepare for the next shot, or to search for a potentially lost ball, either their own or from within the group, so as to maintain the integrity of the 3-minute rule.

Above is the draw for this 2023 KO competition. There are the same number of entries as last year, as only Broome Park did not enter and we welcome Tudor Park in their place. also a copy of the Rules and a list of the Club Contacts.
Clubs who have nominated "RV" for their practice fee may charge the visiting club the figure it charges for its Home practice fees, or if it is also designated as "RV" each club may charge £20.
As you are aware matches this year are to be the aggregate result of both Home and Away legs both to be played in good time before the stated cut-off dates please. Unlike last year, the full draw is shown so that matches which are completed early have a longer window in which to arrange the next round.
If you have any queries or spot anything unclear please do not hesitate to raise them
Please advise me of the result as soon as it is known, showing the match scores (eg 2-1 or 3-0) for each leg
Thank you for your support this year and I wish you some enjoyable encounters, particularly with teams from other groups.
Kind regards
