Kent Golf Super Seniors League
SUPER SENIORS
Competitive golf for the over 70's
The Kent Golf Super Seniors League was established in 2003 for golfers over age 70 by four of the clubs comprising Group 3 of the KGVL (over 60s) League at the behest of players who were becoming excluded from their club 60s teams but who still relished the competitiveness and companionship they had enjoyed from years of playing in the KGVL
The first group quickly expanded to 7 clubs and operated for 7 years before a second Group B started in 2010 with 5 new clubs. More clubs and Groups quickly followed so that we now have seven Groups (A to G) comprising 40 clubs
Each year since 2010, a Grand Final play-off between group winners is held at a host club which rotates round the groups but with the proviso that it is not played on the home course of any finalist. The winner receives The Rochester & Cobham Cup. Bearsted has won the final four times, Weald of Kent three times and Rochester & Cobham, Wildernesse, Woodlands Manor Nizels and Sene Valley once each.
From 2018 a Club Knock-Out Competition has been organised to give league players a better chance meet clubs in other groups. This has so far been won only by Group D clubs once each by Lydd, Tenterden and Ashford.
The SS League operates independently of KGVL but generally mirrors that of KGVL, except that there are no subscriptions. Each team comprises 5 pairs for matches, though match points and handicap limits vary from group to group. The emphasis is on informality so players normally meet about midday for sandwiches & chips before playing 4BBB from about 1pm. Each player pays the home club for lunch, usually under £10. Home players host drinks after play. Ties and jackets are not required.
Most groups organize an end-of-season Jamboree with each club in the group hosting in rotation, when all teams get together for an aggregate stableford team competition. The composition of each group and their arrangements are set out on the Group pages.
Inquiries are welcomed from any club interested in participating in one of the League’s groups and should be directed to John Crates at [email protected] or by telephone to 01892 890266.
Website enquiries should be sent to Colin Hatcher [email protected]
